IP Rating explained

A legally required rating for electrical products which identifies the degree of protection afforded from dust, water and accidental contact. It is a 2 digit number which follows after IP, the higher the numbers, the higher the protection afforded.

Protection against solid objects Protection against liquids
0 = no protection 0 = no protection
1 = protection against solid objects over 50mm e.g hands 1 = protection against vertically falling drops of water
2 = protection against solid objects over 12mm e.g. fingers 2 = protection against sprays of water up to 15° from vertical
3 = protection against solid objects over 2.5mm e.g. tools 3 = protection against sprays of water up to 60° from vertical
4 = protection against solid objects over 1mm e.g small wires 4 = protection against water sprayed from all directions*
5 = protection against dust Limited ingress permiitted 5 = protection against low pressure jets of water*
6 = total protection against dust 6 = protection against high pressure jets of water*

* Limited ingress permitted

When judging between different heaters’ IP ratings, remember that IP 65 cannot be offered when the heater has a wire guard. This is for one simple reason the wire guard does not totally protect  the heat emitter against dust - it cannot.  If in doubt ask for test house certification. You will find that IP24 and above is sufficient for year-round use outside, as these heaters are weatherproof.

Remember – Always ask

Tansun IP rating is backed up by an independent test house certification.
